The University of Utah College of Social Work invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor. Appropriate candidates may be offered tenure. This is a dual appointment within the College of Social Work and the College of Architecture and Planning, with the candidate’s tenure home residing in the College of Social Work. Transformative Excellence Program

The Transformative Excellence Program at the University of Utah identifies areas of university strength that, with a targeted set of interdisciplinary hires, could be elevated to national prominence. This is one of four searches at the University of Utah seeking faculty candidates working on issues related to "Resilient Places for an Aging Society."

The successful candidate will have a strong scholarly record, a fundable research agenda, and documented excellence in teaching. In particular, the university is interested in candidates whose research and teaching expertise are gerontology-based and policy-oriented with relevance to Social Work and Urban Planning disciplines.

Likely topics of inquiry include but are not limited to:

  • Creating and supporting age-inclusive livable communities
  • Independence/accessibility of home environments
  • Affordable housing across the lifespan; or
  • Health disparities among older adults

The candidate will be expected to conduct research within the W.D. Goodwill Initiatives on Aging, the Social Research Institute, and/or the Metropolitan Research Center as appropriate, and to collaborate regularly with others hired in this cluster initiative on external grant proposals. An interdisciplinary research center may emerge from this initiative to which the successful candidate would contribute as a key member.

Required Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must have:

  • PhD in social work, planning, urban design or a related field; if holding a PhD in another discipline, anMSWand some educational and/or professional background in planning, public policy, urban studies, American studies, or public administration is highly preferred
  • Excellent and sustained record of research
  • Demonstrated ability to generate extramural funding (particularly from federal agencies)
  • Teaching interests and expertise in the area
  • Experience in working across disciplines commensurate with their career stage

The College of Social Work (CSW), established in 1937, is the only institution in the Intermountain West that offers all three degrees in social work:BSW,MSW, and PhD. It is now ranked #38 by U.S. News and World Report. TheCSWhouses a number of research entities providing faculty and students research opportunities and support for locating and managing external funding including:

  • Social Research Institute
  • Center on Mindfulness and Integrative Health Intervention Development
  • Utah Criminal Justice Center
  • Center for Research on Migration & Refugee Integration; and
  • W. D. Goodwill Initiatives on Aging

Currently,CSWfaculty are conducting a number of federally-funded, state funded, and foundation funded translational social research projects to advance social work research and innovate evidence-based practices for vulnerable populations.

The College of Architecture and Planning is home to the School of Architecture and the Department of City and Metropolitan Planning (CMP). TheCMPdepartment’s vision is to promote health, socio-ecological systems in the communities it serves through leading edge community-engaged participatory methods. It seeks to have transformational impact on the local condition in ways that have national significance. Affiliated with the department are five dynamic, interdisciplinary research centers: the Metropolitan Research Center, the Center for Ecological Planning and Design, the Global Change and Sustainability Center, the National Institute for Transportation and Communities, and the Consortium for Dark Sky Studies.
