A carrot-and-stick approach might be used on the US-auto industry. "You get the money, IF":
-the factories are re-tooled for production of small, energy efficient models, e.g. hybrids
-the production of Hummers, SUVs, extra-large pick-ups and anything that is lower than the new fuel economy ratings is DROPPED
-the companies diersify into the production of energy-efficient, low-carbon footprint vehicles, such as light rail cars.

There is absolutely no sense in paying Ford, GM and probably Chrysler to return to business as usual. Especially Chrysler.

Instead of putting the money in there pockets, put it into ours so we can buy new cars. That wikk be helping the auto makers and the unfortunate citizens pf today. Why bail them out? They never cut us any slack when it comes to car payments. REPO!!! REPO!!! REPO!!!

Absolutely no money should be paid out to the high executives of any of the big three.  They should also be made to go through the procedures they would have to go through if filing Chapter 11 to get rid of things they need to.

Why doesn't our government *stop* bailing out all of these companies? Whatever happened to a free market and economy that's not *run* by our government? They're destroying the thing that makes this country great: Capitalism!

If a business can't figure out how to keep itself in business... then it shouldn't be a business anymore! Let it go under and a smarter, more capable business will fill in to meet the demands!
